The image features a wooden sculpture of a figure with a striking and somewhat stylized design. The sculpture has a large, elongated head with detailed facial features including eyes, a nose, and a mouth etched into the wood. The head is adorned with multiple protruding elements that resemble spikes or nails, creating a crown-like effect. The body of the sculpture is slender and elongated, with arms flat against its sides, also carved with details that suggest clothing or armor.

The background shows a natural, outdoor setting with a clear sky and some clouds, along with grass and distant trees, indicating that the sculpture is placed in an open landscape. The art style seems rustic and possibly inspired by tribal or ancient artwork, giving it a powerful and evocative presence.

Hel (Old Norse Hel, “Hidden”) is a giantess and/or goddess who rules over the identically-named Hel, the underworld where many of the dead dwell. Her name’s meaning of “Hidden” surely has to do with the underworld and the dead being “hidden” or buried beneath the ground.
According to the thirteenth-century Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson, Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda (Old Norse Angrboða, “Anguish-boding”), and therefore the sister of the wolf Fenrir and the world serpent, Jormungand. This makes her part of a highly dangerous and disreputable family.
